Cameras

My earliest camera was a 110mm film camera. It was really only a point and shoot with all films only being 24 shots. The uncommon film type and lack of functionality meant it saw little use.

My first digital camera was a Canon Ixus II compact bought in March 2004. It saw a lot of use over the summer of 2004 and 2005 as I toured the north west and most of the country, mainly as I hunted down the last of the loco hauled electrics and went to university open days.

Its limitations became apparent as I increasingly used it. Whilst the images were usually pretty good, it had a long shutter lag time resulting in poor photos of trains moving at speed. It also suffered with no super zoom.

By Christmas 2005, its replacement was in the wings.

The Panasonic DMC FZ5 was receiving rave reviews as a super bridge camera. When I got this it was very apparent. It made a great camera and travelled everywhere when I went far. It saw the country from Scotland to the Isle of Wight. It saw Australia and Gran Canaria. It saw everything from the steady Pacer unit to general nightclub debauchery in Newcastle. Unfortunately my lack of knowledge about cameras and lenses lead to a build up of dirt and dust in the lens and motor. It gave up the ghost in May 2007.

Some lambasted me for getting a successor to the FZ5. It had failed pretty quickly for a camera, but the FZ8 could not be matched for quality and the price still remained competitive. The FZ8 proved to be my main camera for freshers week and semester 1.

Currently my main camera is a Nikon D80 with additional bits including a flashgun and a range of lenses.
