Newcastle University is situated in the North East of England. I do a lot of online posting and get asked many questions about the university. After careful consideration, I thought it was time to post some information about the university, the union, accommodation and the city on my website to prevent me from having to post answers again and again. For further information go to here History of the UniversityThe University can trace its origins back to 1834 when it was started as a college of medicine giving degrees from the University of London. It became part of Durham University in 1851 named as the University of Durham, Colllege of Medicine. In 1871, the College of Physical Science was created to meet the needs of the local mining industry. The two colleges merged to become Kings College, Durham in 1937. Many of the red brick buildings built in that era still remain standing around the Quadrangle as does the Union Building, built in 1924. After World War II, the campus expanded to become the biggest college of Durham University and several attempts were made to turn the university into a separate institution during the fifties. This finally occurred in 1963 with the passing of the Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne Universities Act. Since then, the university has expanded at a fast rate, with the medical school becoming a leading place of education in the country. The university over all is highly regarded by many headteachers in UK schools. Recent projects in the development of the university include construction of a brand new sports centre. Future Developments include the construction of new administration facilities, a science city on the site of the old brewery near the football stadium and possibly new student accommodation to cope with increasing demand.
